Chapter 19

Trent was usually pretty well spoken. He hardly ever struggled with his words, even in the most stressful or unpleasant situation. In his current position as an investment broker, there had been many situations in which he had to inform his clients of their financial misfortune, particularly within the last couple of years. As a police officer in Jamaica, he sometimes had had to tell parents or other family members the worst possible news: that their loved ones had been killed in a gunfight or a car accident. All of those conversations were difficult, but Trent had always been able to find the right words to explain the circumstances and console those affected.

Now, standing in front of Renee, with her piercing eyes looking deep into his soul, his mind was blank. He could not find an appropriate explanation for the circumstances they were both in.

The minute he saw the destruction of Renee’s apartment, Trent knew this conversation was inevitable. And since that moment almost five hours ago, he had been struggling with how to tell her about his participation in the situation.

Two weeks ago, when he and Nathan discovered that Nathan’s lover was a fraud and that the real Renee Goodchild was a victim of identity theft, Trent was left with very mixed feelings. On one side, he was concerned about the unscrupulous woman with no identity. She had the ability to destroy his cousin’s life if she wanted, and they had no idea who she really was. And to what extent had this woman implicated Renee in her crimes? If she was bold enough to impersonate Renee around New York City in order to commit extortion, it was very possible that she also used Renee’s identity for other financial fraud.

Yet, while his police training told him to be wary of the whole state of affairs, Trent could not deny that he was very relieved. His Renee was actually the beautiful, smart, and successful woman whose companionship he grudgingly enjoyed.

Up to that point, he had tried to deny feeling anything for her other than contempt and scorn. He dismissed the excitement and attraction he experienced for her as a strictly physical and primal reaction. The alternative—that he had somehow become captivated by a skanky gold digger who was also his cousin’s leftovers—was just unacceptable.

Now as Trent looked into Renee’s eyes as she waited for an explanation, he wondered what advice his dad would have for this situation. What do you do when the right woman finally comes into your life, but you’ve done something so horrible that she would likely never forgive you?

He took a deep breath and leaped forward with his best attempt to explain everything to Renee.

“I sought you out on purpose to save my cousin’s marriage.”

She wrinkled her forehead, then shook her head, clearly struggling to understand his words.

“What? Someone pretending to be me did what?”

“Renee, it’s pretty complicated, and I don’t think you’re in the right frame of mind.”

“Trent, there is nothing wrong with my frame of mind, all right? So you better tell me what’s going on right now.
